Planning a Chiang Rai tour — what travellers ask us most
We have run day tours out of Chiang Rai since 2013, so these are the questions we answer almost every week.
How many days do you need in Chiang Rai?
Most travellers see the main sights comfortably in one full day. Our Chiang Rai 7 Highlights day tour covers the White Temple, the Blue Temple, the Black House, a tea plantation, the Golden Triangle, the Opium House and a hill-tribe village between about 08:00 and 18:30. If you have two or three days, we would add a jungle trek, the waterfalls and the border town of Mae Sai.
Is it better to join a small group or book a private tour?
Our small-group Chiang Rai tour runs daily at 1,200 THB per person, with a maximum of nine guests, so you meet other travellers and keep the cost down. A private car or van costs 3,500 to 4,500 THB for the whole day and lets you set your own pace, start later, or change the route as you go. Both include hotel pickup and a licensed guide.
Do you collect us from our hotel?
Yes. Hotel pickup anywhere in Chiang Rai town is included in every tour, usually between 08:00 and 08:30. If you are staying further out, tell us where and we will confirm a time that works.
Are entrance fees included?
No, and that is deliberate. You pay entrance fees on the day only for the places you actually want to go inside, so nobody pays for a museum they walked past. Your guide will tell you the exact cost at each stop before you decide.
When is the best time of year to visit Chiang Rai?
November to February is cool and clear and is our busiest season. March and April are hot and can be hazy. The green season from June to October is quiet, the countryside is at its best and the waterfalls are full — tours run every day of the year.
